A gas jet looks like a brass nut with a small hole pierced at the centre. This hole is where the gas passes through. The pressure of the gas is thus reduced before it arrives at the burner. The jet controls the rate at which the gas is delivered to the burner. Gas jets designed for smaller-sized hob rings have small holes; those for larger hob rings have larger holes.
