The extension tube or flexible hose is blocked
Are you hearing a metallic rattling sound when you turn your vacuum cleaner on or off? It's possible that a coin has got trapped in the metal extension tube and is knocking against the inside. You can see if this is the case using a piece of stiff wire or an unwound metal coat hanger. Push it through the tube to remove the blockage.
The dust bag is full
If your vacuum cleaner's dust bag is blocked and will no longer allow enough air to pass through, this will create a vacuum and cause the motor to produce a muffled noise. To avoid this problem occurring, we recommend regularly changing the dust bag on your vacuum cleaner and not waiting till it's full to bursting point.
Purchase a vacuum cleaner dust bag
The filters are clogged
With use, the vacuum cleaner's internal and external filters can get clogged up. When this happens, the vacuum cleaner will make a muffled sound like the noise it makes when the dust bag is full. Remember to check the filters on a regular basis. If they get worn or clogged up, they can damage the motor by causing it to overheat.
Purchase a vacuum cleaner filter
The motor has jammed
Vacuum cleaner motors can sometimes start making noises of either a dull or piercing kind. Dull sounds can be caused by hair or pieces of string getting wrapped around the impeller, preventing the motor from turning properly. Piercing noises are normally associated with worn motor bearings. This problem often occurs after the appliance has been used to vacuum up fine particles of some kind, such as plaster or flour. Domestic vacuum cleaners are not designed to cope with these kinds of materials/substances.
